Sexist language

No one noted (or used as an example for the classroom assignment) the sexist language quote I posted this week! It really sounds bad to 21st century ears, but remember--this man was writing a hundred years ago before we (men and women alike) became sensitive to the issues of gender in the English language.

“Life is a foreign language; all men mispronounce it.” Christopher Morley

You are right! I didn't even read it until you mentioned it. For those of us married folks, we all have a bit of an insight to this remark!
There I go, adding to the sexism.

I could see the same thing being said for women. I think the quote should be changed to "Life is a foreign language; all people mispronounce it."

But I did snicker a little when I read it.

Life does not come with a book of instructions, you learn as you go. To say "all men mispronounce it" is definitely sexist. The comment that cmewes left " all people mispronounce it" is closer to the truth.

This is a very sexist comment. You know, men and women make jokes like this all the time. It's funny, I tend to think of myself as a person who does not use sexist language, but I have made jokes like this, so I guess I do use sexist language.

I did not even notice this until you mentioned it! I think this is a prime example of how we just ignore the sexism in the world. I mean I do not take offense to this or anything, however some people may be offended. This is also a prime example of how things are different today than they were back when that was written. Times have changed, women are more equal to males.

I agree that life has many journeys and it does not come with instructions. Everyone has to learn from their mistakes. I agree that this is a sexist comment.
